Arousal From the Banal

OIL PAINT ON CANVAS

In this series, compositions of disembodied appendages culturally viewed as asexual (feet, arms, etc.) share a space with manufactured objects void of personality or meaning. These body “still lifes,” rendered in a gendered visual language pioneered by pornography, destabilize the viewer & their perception of the subject matter. In this work I expose the source of our bias, a visual vernacular exploited in popular imagery in which the commercialization, commoditization & efficacy of one’s appearance defines one’s identity.
